                          TKC's FM Repeater Operating Tips

 Tip #1

     I often hear new and old stations via the repeaters requesting a radio check. In most cases, no one replies to the calling station, Why?. The reason is that the word check is used on 11 Meters and most amateur stations will not bother to interact with anyone who uses any CB Terms. My simple fix to this problem is to change the word CHECK to TEST. Try my personal tested tip as this will bring you in station replies and not SILENCE!

 Tip #2

It is a custom on most FM repeaters to sign off your QSO with the infamous "73". Many operators both old and new make the improper mistake and turn the 73 to 73's to make this a plural. Although there is no FCC &/or operating rule, many operators will interpret this as CB. Remember to proudly say your 73 as "seven three"   and not three's.

 Tip #3

 Many operators on FM Repeaters continue to identify themselves over and over and this is not only poor operating pratice but it also makes the stations who are listening to you know if you came from CB. To avoid this ongoing problem I have a simple solution. Most FM Repeaters ID every 10 minutes and the best time to say your call sign is when you hear the repeater ID itself. Try my personal tested tip as this also will bring you in station replies and not SILENCE!

  Tip #4

 When you ID your call sign to initiate a QSO, remember to be patient and remain on the frequency for at least 1 minute as many operators do monitor FM repeaters using scanners and may need time to get to their transceiver to get back to your call !
