FM Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)

   Due to popular demand, I created this page for the many amateurs and SWL's who frequently ask about the MURS radio service that is available to any US Citizen. The FCC established in 2002 a VHF-FM Citizens Band Radio Service named the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS). MURS is a private, two-way, short-distance voice or data communications service for personal and/or business activities of the general public.

   MURS permits the use of various emission modes, but the most common is voice using FM modulation. Data communications are permitted, but the FCC prohibits image transmissions and also prohibits using any MURS frequency as a conventional repeater. The rules however do allow use of High Gain external antennas [Whip &/or Vertical] and with the same height limits that apply to 11 Meters.

Transmitter Power Output maximum is 2 Watts!

  MURS frequencies are:

1.151.820 MHz NFM
2.151.880 MHz NFM
3.151.940 MHz NFM
4.154.570 MHz WFM
5.154.600 MHz WFM

   NFM=Narrow FM
   WFM=Wide FM

There is however a legal glitch,
The FCC requires MURS ONLY-type accepted radios ! Most newer commercial land-mobile VHF radios that are certified under part 90, conform to the MURS rules. All amateur 2m modded radios are illegal to use !

   This is the way the commission updated MURS rules and unfortunately, you can't change them so if you wish to experiment on your own, just let me say that this is at your own risk as you could subject your amateur license in jeopardy!

 There are MURS exclusive radios available for legal use. You must decide how and what transceiver you decide to use. Keep in mind that MURS is license free for you and your family and that beats a GMRS $35.00 license.

As of today, Motorola only has ONE RADIO, the RMM2050. This dedicated MURS radio offers all 5 license free MURS frequencies with 219 PL/DPL codes (Includes 6 Customizable Codes), channel scan, three voice-inversion scramble settings and three audible call tones. The RMM2050 is the successor to the Motorola RDM2020 & RDM2080d radios which have been discontinued.

Other radios that are MURS exclusive are from Columbia and Dakota. Columbia and Dakota brand radios are found on e-bay and Amazon.com, but are not designed for professional use.

Important. The general rule with MURS radios is,

"The cheaper the radio, the cheaper the quality" !
