FM Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)

Due to popular demand, I have created this page for the many amateurs and SWL's who frequently ask myself about this topic. It highlights a new radio service available to any US Citizen. The FCC established as of 2002 a new VHF-FM Citizens Band Radio Service named the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS). MURS is a private, two-way, short-distance voice or data communications service for personal and/or business activities of the general public.

   MURS permits the use of various emission modes, but the most common is voice using FM modulation. Data communications are permitted, but the FCC prohibits image transmissions. The maximum Transmitter Power Output is 2 Watts maximum and the FCC prohibits using any MURS frequency as a conventional repeater . The rules however do allow use of High Gain external antennas [Whip &/or Vertical] and with the same height limits that apply to 11 Meters.

MURS frequencies are:

1.151.820 MHz
2.151.880 MHz
3.151.940 MHz
4.154.570 MHz
5.154.600 MHz

   There is one serious legal glitch and that is the FCC is requiring MURS ONLY-type accepted radios. Most newer commercial land-mobile VHF radios that are certified under Part 90 conform to the MURS rule but any amateur 2m modded radios are illegal to use !

   This is the way the commission updated MURS rules and unfortunately folks, I can't change them so if you wish to experiment on your own, just let me say that this is at your own risk as you could subject your amateur license in jeopardy!

 There are MURS units available for legal use and I have provided a well known link to help get you started. Just remember, You must decide how & what transceiver you decide to use. Keep in mind that MURS is license free for you and your family and that beats a GMRS $85.00 license.

  * Update *

  As of 2009, the Maxon tru-talk radio remains the best MURS radio available. The only other radios that are MURS exclusive are from Dakota and Columbia.

 Columbia radios are still found on e-bay and Amazon but are not designed for professional use.  Click link below for an accurate review of the Columbia units for your evaluation.

Important. Frequently check E-Bay for Columbia Brand MURS Radios as I have seen them for as little as $40.00 including all 5 channels !

Keep in mind folks the general rule is

"The cheaper the radio, The cheaper the quality" !

5 channel 2 Watt operation - FCC Type Accepted

N2TKC is pleased to report that there is a vendor still selling the Maxon MURS 25 radios. I have linked the vendor to the radio's picture. This radio is still a well sought radio gem, but due to the limited availability, be prepared to pay a price for this legal 5 Channel MURS radio !
